Some believe Caye Caulker had its start on early maps under the name of "Cay Corker." Many believe that the original Caye Caulker name of Cay Corker, came from the island’s reputation for an abundance of fresh water at La Aguada. It is believed that the island of Cay Caulker was a favorite stop for sailors to fill and then cork their water bottles. The Spanish name of the island is Cayo Hicaco, which means "the island of the cocoplum."
